This painting was originally created for my first solo show at D-Structure (also known as DSF) in the Haight neighborhood of San Francisco. Oil on Pine Slab, Custom French Cleat.

This was my first foray into raw wood slices that lead to my current body of work today. One of my self prescribed challenges was to paint a skull in an innovative way. Skulls have been painted and drawn by endless artists and illustrators, so the idea of bringing originality to the subject matter was no easy task. Additionally I had seen some kitsch craftwork done on these slices of pine. I thought what better challenge than to paint a tired subject matter on a tired substrate and make it somehow cool and innovative? With a focus on color exploration, form rendering and composition, I think I was successful in this series. Hopefully, you do as well.
